History

Calcutta International School was established in 1953 by Miss Barth and has been known by its current name since 1970. It started as a small institution exclusively for the children of the then expatriate British community. The school earned a high reputation as an institution providing quality academic and extra-mural education under Miss Barth who won an OBE for her services. The school was housed in a colonial building at 18, Lee Road, Kolkata-700020.

In 1970, the Calcutta International School Society (CISS) was formed under the West Bengal Society's Regulation Act, 1961. Today, the school is a larger institution for the sons and daughters of expatriates, foreign passport holders, former non-resident Indians and the local community (in that order), but maintains its exclusive character and reputation among other similar institutions.

CIS offers IGCSE and A Level curricula for the senior classes and follows the UK National Strategy for the entire school. It is a British Council affiliated centre for London Examinations from Edexcel International (Centre No. 93058) and for Cambridge International Examinations (Centre No: IN218). At present, CIS is exploring the possibiity of introducing the IB Diploma Programme.

All the conventional school level subjects are taught. It has fully equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computers. All classrooms are bright, well ventilated and air-conditioned. Extra-mural activities include sports, elocution, music, debating, drama, dance, extempore speech training, public speaking, personality development, taekwondo, scouts and guides etc. CIS also has arrangements with some of the city's top clubs for training sessions in squash, tennis and swimming.

There is a computer laboratory with broadband access for teachers and students, music room, art room, cafeteria of an international standard with indoor and outdoor seating and a state of the art library, with a panoramic view of the playground. There is facility for a wide range of extra curricular acitivities on campus.

Academic Overview

The school's pedagogical philosophy is to impart quality education within the nonĀ coercive regime of discipline, from kindergarten right upto 'A' levels. Accordingly, student numbers per class are limited to an average of 24. The school's academic record at both '0' and 'A' levels compares favourably with the best in the world. CIS offers three academic streams: Humanities, Sciences and Business Studies. Board level examinations conducted by Edexcel (IGCSE & GCE) and CIE (GCE) are held twice a year; students have the option to take the modules on offer at each of these, depending on their own preparedness.

The methods of teaching are in keeping with international demands, with the use of audio-visual aids and K'T. Learning takes place in a stress free classroom environment and is inclusive of all learning styles. Skills of comprehension, analysis, synthesis and evaluation are developed as a natural process of the child's academic and cultural growths.

=Curriculum=

CIS offers 'O' Level and 'A' Level curricula for the graduating classes and follows the UK National Strategy for the entire school. It is-a British Council-affiliated Centre for London Examinations with Edexcel International (Centre No. 93058) and for Cambridge International Examinations (Centre No. IN218).

Textbooks are carefully selected keeping the UK Examination Boards' recommendation and their national strategy in mind. All such textbooks are provided by the school to students up to the 'O' Levels, free of charge. Reference books of international standard are also available in the Library for the students to use.

CIS offers three academic streams: Business Studies, Humanities, and Science. The school's pedagogical philosophy is to impart quality education within the non-coercive regime of discipline, from Kindergarten right up to 'A' levels. Accordingly, the number of students per class/section is generally limited to twenty five. The school's academic record, at both 'O' and 'A' Levels, compares favourably with the best in the world.

All the conventional school level subjects are taught, besides languages, art and computer science. It has fully equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computing Studies.

A unique feature of our school is that private tuitions are discouraged. Extra help is offered in all subjects during school hours as far as possible. Sometimes children stay back after formal lessons are over, to catch up in areas that need greater attention.

In junior classes, the children are not exposed to final examinations, and progression is based totally on their performance throughout the year. Final examinations start from Class 6 with the core subjects i.e. English Language, Literature, Mathematics and Science. For Class VII upwards, final examination is taken in all subjects.

A more formal approach to academics begins from Class VII. Instead of the integrated science course done earlier, they are now introduced to the three separate disciplines of Science, namely Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Projects, reference and research work, independent and group activities are encouraged.

Firm foundation for the 'O' Level board examination is laid in Class VIII. Children are offered a choice of subjects at the end of that year. CIS organizes an Aptitude Test along with Career Counseling to guide students regarding their choice of subjects for the 'O' Level course.

==Library==

We have a state of the art Library with wide-ranging titles supporting curriculum taught at all levels in school, including reference material accessible to staff as well as students.

The stock consist of books fiction and non fiction, reference books, periodicals, CD-ROMS, audio and videocassettes, that cover a panoramic spectrum of subjects to satisfy the urge to learn and curiosity that is so natural to a child.

The library is constantly acquiring new titles to stay up-to-date with the latest in the world. Students are encouraged continuous use of the library to instil and establish firm and lasting reading habits.Classes 2 onwards have regular library classes when they are allowed to borrow one fiction for a week. Children are exposed to simplified classics ranging from Charles Dickens to Jules Verne to Rudyard Kipling. For senior students, we have unabridged classics as well as best sellers. They are encouraged into the habit of discussing books, sub-borrowing and lending among themselves when they finish reading their own books. Internet browsing facility for research & projects is available for both teachers and students. This is supplemented with photocopy and scanning facilities.
